India Launches Strikes in Pakistan and Pakistan-Administered Kashmir After Militant Attack

Two weeks after a deadly militant assault in Indian-administered Kashmir that killed 26 people, including 25 Indians and one Nepali national, India has launched a series of strikes targeting what it calls "terrorist infrastructure" in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir.

The Indian Defence Ministry said the operation, codenamed Operation Sindoor, was aimed at holding those responsible for the 22 April attack in Pahalgam accountable. The strikes reportedly hit nine locations, which India claims were used to plan and coordinate attacks. Officials emphasized the operation was "measured and non-escalatory", and no Pakistani military facilities were targeted.

Pakistan has strongly condemned the strikes, calling them "unprovoked aggression". Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif vowed retaliation, warning the act would not go unpunished. Pakistan’s military said Indian aircraft and drones were shot down, and that the strikes resulted in at least 26 deaths and 46 injuries. India, in turn, reported 15 civilian deaths and 43 injuries from Pakistani shelling across the Line of Control.

The attacks follow rising tensions after the 22 April assault, where survivors alleged militants were targeting Hindu men. The incident marked the worst civilian attack in the region in 20 years and reignited longstanding hostilities between the nuclear-armed neighbors.

Though India has not named a specific group responsible, it alleged that two of the militants were Pakistani nationals. Pakistan has denied any involvement in the attack and dismissed India’s claims as baseless.

The recent escalation recalls previous flashpoints, including the 2016 Uri attack and 2019 Pulwama bombing, both of which triggered Indian military responses across the border. International leaders, including UN Secretary-General António Guterres and US President Donald Trump, have urged both sides to exercise restraint and pursue diplomatic solutions to avoid further conflict.
